My news

This page is designed to keep you informed of my latest news, events concerning myself, and to present items of interest to those who would like to keep in touch with what I get up to here in Bristol and elsewhere. Consider it as an occasional mini-blog, or an extended in-house version of Twitter.

There’s also a practical side to this page: it is here where I will announce, for example, when I am not available to take sessions, perhaps because I am travelling or simply taking a break, as well as information about my equipment and implements and new items that I may acquire from time to time.

If it’s easier for some of you to follow me on Twitter, I’ve made it simple: just click on the Twitter icon to the right, and go straight to my profile to follow me on Twitter.

But since you’re here, why not take a look at my news below.

Glimpses of striking art from a gallery far, far away

I’ve been busier than usual in my travels this time round, but have still found attending the odd art exhibition to be time well spent, and regular visitors to my News page will be well aware of this. So, from a gallery in a land far, far away, I bring to these pages a glimpse of a group exhibition that presented many artists and pieces of work I found very striking, none more so than the work of Pakistani artist Naiza Khan.

Ms Khan studied fine art in London and Oxford and has since turned out some sculptural pieces, principally in metal, that immediately appealed to me. I expect the pieces I have chosen to highlight here will also appeal to my faithfuls...Read more

This time it’s cat masks in Singapore’s covered markets

This time it’s cat masks in Singapore’s covered markets

It’s 2019 already, so I hope all my faithfuls and regular visitors to my site had a pleasant festive season. I have quite a few News items to catch up on, so the first half-dozen or so will be retrospectives from 2018. Well, that was only a few days ago, after all.

I’m beginning here with photos taken in Singapore: a rather splendid-looking cat mask, and a cat-motif cushion. I can see select faithfuls wearing the mask, and I can see one of my own cats reclining on the cushion. Those who have visited my premises may well be aware...Read more

Don’t get in the way of a charging knight when champagne’s at stake

Don’t get in the way of a charging knight when champagne’s at stake

Behold the striking design on the top of this champagne wire cork holder: a charging knight on horseback, sword drawn. If he’s in a hurry to get to his stock of champagne I wouldn’t want to get in his way; either that, or – judging from the style of the helmet – he’s a Crusader-era knight eager to plunder, in which case I still wouldn’t want to get in his way.

I discovered this cork-holder image when I opened a bottle of...Read more

In celebration of black cats

How travel tends to occupy one. I am travelling, and I am very occupied, but I do intend to keep some News items coming over the next six weeks or so while I’m away. So, after this longest-ever break from my News page it’s time to catch up a little and I’m starting by acknowledging a very thoughtful gift from one of my faithfuls – a gift I would not have anticipated. I appreciate initiative!

Now, a calendar might be thought of as a somewhat mundane item, but not this one, which you can see is Italian. But that’s not all: Le Chat Noir is one of my favourite images. I remember first seeing it in a café-bar in the Jordaan...Read more

Important reminder

Sun. 18 Nov. 2018

This is a reminder – to “put up front”, as they say – that my final date for appointments in 2018 is this Tuesday, 20 November.

My first sessioning date for next year is as yet undetermined, but I anticipate it to be in the first half of February. For further information, please see my News item of 20 October: Announcing my final sessioning date for this year.

Naughty Sydney, 1988: a reminder of pre-’net advertising

Naughty Sydney, 1988: a reminder of pre-’net advertising

Whilst flicking through Twitter recently I came across a posting that highlighted a page from Naughty Sydney, 15 July 1988. I still can't help but marvel – and smile – at how “the scene” was back then and how much it has changed with the internet, Fifty Shades, and the explosion of the fetish club and fashion scene from, say, the mid 1990s (and that now seems to be in decline).

When I look at this image from the pages of Naughty Sydney, I see how Mistress Amanda and her colleagues accept credit cards; an ad for Aunt Agatha, who offers “good old fashioned discipline like aunty used to give”; and...Read more

‘What could possibly go wrong?’ And for what?

Tues. 30 Oct. 2018

The word around town is that age verification (AV) for certain categories of “adult” websites will finally be introduced during the first half of next year. At this stage it appears only the biggest/most popular/most “commercial” sites will be forced to implement AV – or face having their service providers banning them and/or be forcibly blocked at the UK ISP level.

There are so many issues and problems surrounding this unprecedented move – at least, in a Western so-called “democracy” – that it’s hard to know where to begin to comment. So I’ll keep this to two main points...Read more

Announcing my final sessioning date for this year

Sat. 20 Oct. 2018

On 25 September I announced here on my News page that my annual travel will commence earlier than usual and will extend longer than usual (see I’m travelling earlier than usual this year, and will be away longer). I am now in a position to announce my last sessioning day for this year: Tuesday 20 November.

Unfortunately, I am not in a position to similarly announce my first sessioning day in the new year; circumstances dictate that I must leave the exact date open...Read more

Balloonfest, Pinch style

Balloonfest, Pinch style

Bristol is known for its international hot-air balloon festival, or “fiesta” as it’s officially named. It is, according to online publicity, “Europe’s largest annual meeting of hot air balloons, attracting over 130 Hot Air Balloons from across the globe”. I can testify to the spectacular nature of the event since, every year, dozens of these large balloons sail the breeze around – and sometimes directly over – Pinch HQ Bristol as they head in the direction of Bath.

What can also be spectacular is “balloonfest”, Pinch style, right here on the ground. I’m sure those who are aware of my favourite activity...Read more

What promises to be a fine French wine

What promises to be a fine French wine

In examining my gift list on my main website, sometimes a faithful will look at the varieties of wine I have listed and read between the lines to reach a deeper interpretation of the style of wine I prefer, and acquire something for me that’s a bit of a surprise. I like surprises, especially when they promise so much.

A case in point is this Cabalié, a French wine I am not familiar with; they are medium-to-full-bodied Grenache-based blends and are from the Roussillon region of south-eastern France. The wider region is the Languedoc-Roussillon, which at its southern tip borders on north-eastern Spain...Read more
