We are now beginning the Year of the Pig

Mon. 04 Feb. 2019

In case you didn’t know, tomorrow, Tuesday 5 February, is the beginning of the Chinese Year of the Pig. And as you can see, as I transit Changi Airport in Singapore, the beginning of the new year is a big thing for our Chinese brethren, just as the new year is a big thing in the Western world.

The pig is one of the animals associated with the Chinese zodiac system, and the pig is a symbol of wealth, as you can read in the brief but informative sign that accompanies the Year of the Pig display at Changi. I was quite taken by the display, which is in a garden-like setting. Such happy looking pigs! I must say, in general I am very impressed with Changi Airport – it’s possibly the best, most interesting and most relaxed airport I know.

Now, for some reason I’m reminded of my travels in Phuket, Thailand, in 2012, and specifically of a Thai God of Death. I know, it’s a long way from these Chinese happy pigs, but the “display” is similarly impressive (even more so, in fact), and it is also in a “garden” setting (as in natural almost-jungle). So, if you dare... For those who think I’m severe, think again – it could be worse!

Returning to happy pigs now, I hope you are doing something special to mark the Year of the Pig – I am.

Happy New Year!

Mistress Geo
